Mandela Memorial Held At St. Paul Cathedral
ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) - Nelson Mandela's casket made the nearly 600-mile trip from the South African capital of Pretoria to his home village Saturday.
A memorial service to honor the African leader was held at the Cathedral of St. Paul Saturday.
Political and community leaders spoke at the event, which was closed to cameras.
Nelson Mandela was the first democratically-elected president of South Africa, as well that nation's first black president. He helped to end apartheid, the country's system of racial oppression.
Mandela will be laid to rest on Sunday.
