Man, 34, Charged In Crash That Killed Sandstone Teen
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Sandstone man has been charged in connection with a car accident that left a 17-year-old Sandstone boy dead and two others injured.
Charles Theodore Hendricks, 34, has been charged with one count of criminal vehicular homicide, one count of a DWI in the 3rd degree and one count of violating a driving restriction.
According to the criminal complaint, around 8:27 p.m. on Feb. 9 Pine County and Kanabec County deputies responded to a call of a car accident near the intersection of Well Street and 380th Avenue in Kanabec County.
Upon arrival, police found a white Chevy truck sitting in the middle of the road and a silver Chevy Impala sitting in a ditch.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the front.
According to the criminal complaint, police found Hendricks at the scene covered in blood and crawling through the debris. As he was crawling police said he was yelling, "What did I do? What did I do? I killed someone."
Police said Hendricks' speech was slurred and they could smell alcohol on his breath.
Upon investigating, officers found a 750 ml bottle of Smirnoff Vodka in Hendricks' truck.
Police were able to discern that Hendricks had crossed the center line in his truck and struck the silver Impala head-on in the southbound lane of traffic.
The driver of the Impala, a 17-year-old Sandstone boy, died on impact and was trapped inside the vehicle.
The Impala's passengers were transported to the Sandstone hospital for their injuries.
