Man Shot After Fleeing Eden Prairie Police Charged
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Hennepin County Attorney's Office has charged a 21-year-old Bloomington man accused of fleeing police in his motorcycle over the weekend.
On Tuesday, Matthew Raymond Hovland-Knase was charged with one felony count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.
According to the criminal complaint, on June 20 at around 3 a.m. officers observed a 2014 Honda motorcycle speeding westbound on Valley View Road in Eden Praire.
The officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the motorcycle turned northbound on Eden Prairie Road against a red light without stopping and accelerated at a high rate of speed. In the chase, the motorcycle used numerous illegal maneuvers and reached speeds approaching 100 mph, the complaint said.
Eventually, the motorcyclist pulled to the side of the road and officers initiated a felony stop. During the stop, the arresting officer accidentally discharged his service weapon and struck the motorcyclist in the left arm. The motorcyclist was later identified as Hovland-Knase, according to the complaint.
Officers then rendered first aid to Hovland-Knase. While doing so, the officers could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from Hovland-Knase's breath. He was then taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center for medical treatment.
There, Hovland-Knase agreed to submit to a blood test and the results are currently pending.
If convicted, Hovland-Knase faces up to three years and one day in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.
