Man Sentenced To 74 Months In Deadly New Hope Bar Assault
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 27-year-old man was sentenced to more than six years in prison Monday for his role in a June 2014 assault at a New Hope bar that left another man dead.
Daniele Wright was sentenced to 74 months in prison in connection with the incident. Wright had been charged with manslaughter as a result of misdemeanor assault and pleaded guilty to charges. He admitted in court that he had been drinking heavily the night he punched 36-year-old John Hillstrom of Crystal outside the Outtakes Bar and Grill in New Hope.
He was originally charged with second-degree unintentional murder.
Court documents say Hillstrom was at the bar on the night of June 13, 2014, and at about 1 a.m., words were exchanged between him, Wright and Christopher Gantt. A bartender told Hillstrom to go back inside and let the other men leave.
But Gantt and Wright went back inside, and Gantt punched Hillstrom in the face. Hillstrom was knocked to the ground, and when he got back up, Wright punched him. Hillstrom fell to the ground and hit his head on the pavement. He died from his injuries on Nov. 30, 2014.
