Man Sentenced For Killing Good Samaritan At July 4th Party
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Brooklyn Center man was sentenced Wednesday to more than 14 years in prison for the murder of a Good Samaritan at a Minneapolis Fourth of July party.
Joseph Lee Smith, 25, was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder in the 2014 death of 28-year-old Cabrie Young, according to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.
Smith shot Young in the chest in the midst of a fight that broke out at a party on the 3400 block of Dupont Avenue North. He was trying to carry an unconscious man into a house when he was shot.
Young's mother says he was a father of three and an aspiring tattoo artist.
Smith has a criminal record that stretches back to when he was a juvenile. He had been shot twice before himself, and walks with a permanent limp as a result.
