Woman Pushing Stroller Hit, Killed While Crossing Street
NORTH ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- A woman pushing a stroller with a 2-year-old boy inside was struck and killed trying to cross a busy highway in the east metro Thursday night.
The Minnesota State Patrol said they were crossing the intersection of Highway 36 and Minnesota 120 in North St. Paul just before 10 p.m. Thursday night when a car struck them. The mother was walking with a group of friends at the time.
Investigators said the woman, who friends identified as 23-year-old Alicia Galdick, was trying cross Highway 36 against a red light and was struck by the car heading eastbound. Friends said they don't know why she tried to cross against the light.
The 2-year-old boy was taken to Regions Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Friends said the boy had sustained some fractures.
"The boy is going to grow up without his mom," said friend Christy Chinn. "It's a tragedy and I don't think it's anybody's fault. It just happened and everyone involved is going to feel this loss. Most of all her mom, dad, and her kid."
The driver of the car was not ticketed. He and his passenger weren't hurt.
The accident remains under investigation. The State Patrol said they do not believe the driver will be charged as Galdick tested positive for alcohol, though authorities didn't elaborate on her level of intoxication.
