Man Killed In Head-On Crash With Semi In Nicollet County
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities say a 63-year-old North Mankato man was killed in a crash Monday when his car was hit by a semi in Nicollet County, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Authorities said the crash happened at about 4 p.m. Monday on Highway 169 northbound near Highway 14 just north of Mankato. A man driving a Jeep two-door wagon was traveling southbound on Highway 169 when he lost control of his car, jumped the median was hit by a semi-truck head-on in the northbound lane of the highway.
The Minnesota State Patrol said icy conditions on the road likely contributed to the crash. The driver of the semi-truck suffered minor injuries.
Authorities identified the 63-year-old victim as Jim Hughes. Officials with the St. Peter School District told WCCO Radio that Hughes had been with the district for 22 years until he retired in 2008. Hughes was an assistant principal and adviser to the student council. The official said he was well-liked.
While slick conditions are likely the main factor in the crash, the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office is assisting the Minnesota State Patrol in investigating the accident.
