Man Gets 60 Days In Jail, Probation For Leaving Fatal Crash
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 44-year-old Rosemount man has been sentenced for his role in a 2009 crash in Dakota County where he hit and killed a woman, then left the scene.
Eric James Hunter was sentenced to 60 days in jail, 30 days sentenced-to-serve and three years probation in connection with the crash that killed 26-year-old Joan LeVasseur. Hunter must also play an undetermined amount of restitution. Hunter also had 13 months in prison stayed, which he'll face if he violates probation.
LeVasseur was crossing the intersection of Cedar Avenue and 153rd Street in Apple Valley at about 9 p.m. on March 6, 2009, when Hunter hit her. He left the scene of the accident without calling police, which is a felony in Minnesota.
The case took a turn when the investigation revealed LeVasseur was crossing the street against a red light in the dark. Pedestrians are required to obey all traffic signals.
In October of 2010, A Dakota County judge declared a hung jury in the case. At a re-trial on Oct. 22, 2012, Hunter pleaded guilty to one felony count of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving a Death.
