Man Gets 25 Years In Prison For Car Wash Shooting
HASTINGS, Minn. (WCCO) -- A Burnsville man was sentenced to more than 25 years in prison for killing a 22-year-old man at a Rosemount car wash.
Jonas Gerald Grice, 29, was sentenced to 306 months in prison by Judge Karen Asphaug. He was also ordered to pay restitution to the family of 22-year-old Anthony Hartman, who Grice shot to death on July 12, 2010.
According to the original criminal complaint, Grice got into an argument with Hartman's friend. When Hartman defended his friend, a shoving match followed and Grice allegedly shot Hartman, then paused and shot him two more times.
Judge Asphaug rejected Grice's initial defense, claiming he was mentally ill at the time of the shooting and wasn't capable of recognizing the nature of his actions.
Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom expressed his sympathy to the family of Hartman.
"This was a shocking crime which senselessly took a life of a young man with a bright future," he said. "The defendant had a history of mental illness and violence in his past and should never have been carrying a weapon."
