Bloomington Man Charged In Fatal Hit-And-Run

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) -- BA 54-year-old man has been charged in a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed an 85-year-old woman, yet remains at large.

Mark Lindgren, of Bloomington, was charged Friday for the crash that occurred on Oct. 21 at 10th Avenue South and East Old Shakopee Road.

Dorothy Hanson was walking home after having dinner with her husband, who lives in a nearby care facility, when she was struck by a vehicle. She was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center where she later died.

Witnesses to the crash told police the truck involved didn't slow down, swerve or brake when it hit Hanson. They also said the truck accelerated after Hanson was hit.

An attorney representing the owner of the truck contacted police on Oct. 26 and made arrangements to turn the truck over to investigators the following day.

The truck was registered to Lindgren and a search warrant was conducted of his apartment.

Upon that search, police collected a one-page document that listed Lindgren's timeline for the date of the accident. On it, it said Lindgren had one drink on the night of the crash, stopped by a friend's bonfire and then headed home. The document said Lindgren did not notice the headlight and damage to his vehicle until he got home.

The document then reads, "Assumed it was a deer or bird."

Police say they found another version of the timeline in Lindgren's shredder.

Police say Lindgren has been arrested for drunk driving in the past -- once in 1992 and another time in 2003 in Indiana.

Lindgren has not yet been arrested in this case.

"The facts that we have, we can only charge the facts we have, that we can show in court. Right now, that's a hit-and-run. That's the most serious crime we can charge with," said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

The more serious charge of vehicular homicide usually involves a driver who was under the influence. So far, there's not enough evidence for that charge.

"As the evidence develops, we always have the right to amend our case and up the charge," he said.

Freeman went on to say that Lindgren is expected to turn himself in.
