Man Allegedly Assaults Elderly Mom, 5-Hour Standoff Ensues
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 55-year-old Crow Wing County man is in custody after allegedly assaulting his elderly mother and threatening her with a gun.
Paul Strom is awaiting formal charges of second-degree assault, terroristic threats and felon in possession of a firearm stemming from an incident Saturday morning in Irondale Township.
The sheriff's office says they received a report of a welfare check at 10:05 a.m. at 20030 Tower Road. Deputies found an elderly woman on the ground outside of the residence when they arrived.
She said her adult son, Strom, had threatened her with a gun before pushing her to the ground.
Authorities removed the woman from the scene before setting up a perimeter around the residence.
The Crow Wing County tactical response, bomb response and crisis negotiation teams talked with Strom for about five hours until he finally left the residence and was arrested without incident at about 2:47 p.m.
The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
