Man, 19, Pleads Guilty In 13-Year-Old's 2011 Shooting Death
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Minneapolis teenager pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the 2011 shooting of 13-year-old Rayjon Gomez.
Donquarius Davon Copeland pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder.
On Aug. 24, 2011, Gomez was riding his bike with a 12-year-old friend in a Minneapolis alley when the two were shot.
Police found the 12-year-old in the street near 16th and Upton Avenues. As he was being transported to North Memorial Hospital he told police his friend was shot nearby.
Later, police found Gomez a couple of blocks away on Russell Avenue, two hours after he was shot. He was pronounced dead on scene. The 12-year-old boy survived.
Copeland was 17 years old at the time of the shooting. He is currently 19 years old.
Kemen Lavatos Taylor and Derrick Deangelo Catchings were also charged in the death of Gomez.
Copeland's sentencing has been scheduled for March 24. He is currently in custody.
Gomez's death came just four days after 14-year-old Quantell Braxton was shot and killed on the city's north side.
