Mall Of America Debuts Public Safety Campaign
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) -- Public safety officials are asking shoppers to pay attention to more than just what is on their holiday shopping list. Members of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and law enforcement officials launched a new public safety campaign at Minnesota's number one tourist destination -- the Mall of America.
It's called the "See Something, Say Something" campaign.
Security officials and law enforcement officers are encouraging shoppers if they see something suspicious to say something to authorities.
Mall officials have placed signs up throughout the mall and video messages are playing at all of the directory kiosks telling shoppers to be alert.
During the holiday shopping season, the Mall of America has 100,000 shoppers on any given day.
Doug Reynolds, the director of mall security, said this campaign is not in response to any specific threat nor is it in reaction to the terrorist threat at the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Oregon last week.
He said they've had this planned for a while and had a goal to launch the campaign in time for the holiday shopping season.
Authorities say this will eventually be a statewide ad campaign that will include restaurants, rest stops and other public places.
The "See Something, Say Something" campaign started in New York City with public transit and has grown from there.
