Main Road Flooded In Hastings, Residents Concerned
HASTINGS (WCCO) -- In Hastings, the rising Mississippi River is bringing new worries. The river has flooded a road that is the main link to East Hastings.
People who live on the east side of town say the only other way to get to their homes right now is at a nearby railroad crossing on East Second Street near downtown. However, when trains pass, they say they sometimes have to wait up to an hour to even get home.
Homeowners worry about what would happen in the case of an emergency, like a fire or a medical problem.
"My husband just had triple bypass two weeks ago, luckily he is just doing fine, but if that were an emergency, he couldn't get to the hospital fast enough, and he'd be gone," said East Hastings homeowner Joan Christensen.
Vicky Majeski, another East Hastings homeowner, says she has waited up to an hour in the back up.
"School buses can't get through. People after work are in line for hours. It doesn't make any sense," said Majeski.
The City of Hastings police, fire and emergency management will hold a meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the fire department on 115 West Fifth in Hastings to talk to people about safety concerns.
Homeowners estimate this problem affects around 150 homes.
