MacArthur Lock Closing Sunday As Season Winds Down

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) — The MacArthur Lock is closing for the winter as the Great Lakes shipping season winds down.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the 800-foot lock will shut down for the winter at 7 a.m. Sunday and reopen in the spring.

The adjacent Poe Lock will remain open through Jan. 15.

About 4,200 vessels carrying 800 million tons of cargo maneuver through the Soo Locks annually. Among the most frequent commodities being shipped are iron ore, coal and limestone.

The Detroit District of the Corps of Engineers maintains a navigation system of 95 harbors, including the Great Lakes Connecting Channels that join lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie.
