Lynx Host 'Camp Day' For Youngsters At Target Center
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – There was a big crowd of young campers at the Minnesota Lynx game on Wednesday as the Lynx suffered their fourth loss of the season.
The Lynx dropped a 112-105 game to the Phoenix Mercury, but the day was all about youth campers.
The Target Center turned into a gigantic daycare facility on Wednesday. There were kids everywhere screaming, yelling and howling, and they were having a great time. The Minnesota Lynx's annual "Camp Day" drew nearly 12,000 fans, most of them years away from being old enough to even vote.
The super-charged group of youth campers pumped up the volume all game long for Lynx despite a tough loss.
"Well, on the big screen it says to make noise so we are just having fun," said Lynx fan Kennedy Conway.
Lynx player Candice Wiggins said they heard the fans the entire game, and it gave them energy in what turned out to be a back-and-forth shootout.
"Definitely they were really amped up, especially when they played Justin Bieber. They were losing their minds," Wiggins said.
Lynx rookie Maya Moore said the noise picked up when they were on the defensive it. It makes it tough for opposing offenses to communicate.
"It was really loud and they did a really great job trying to make it tough on Phoenix when they had the ball," said Moore.
Despite a tough loss to the Mercury, the Lynx said their youthful fan base still believes in their team.
"Do you think the Lynx will win a WNBA title?" WCCO-TV's Eric Nelson asked Lauren Johnson. "I think they will," she said.
"How good are the Lynx?" Nelson asked another young fan. "They're pretty good," he said.
The Lynx players hope their energetic young fans were entertained on Wednesday, because the goal is to get them to come back for future games.
"Go home and tell mommy and daddy," said Lynx player Rebekkah Brunson. "Tell them you want to come back."
