Lynx Gear Up For Run To WNBA Championship
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Lynx are healthy, primed and ready to begin their best-of-five WNBA championship series against the Atlanta Dream Sunday night at Target Center.
Game 1 will tip off at 7:30 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN. The Lynx played the dream twice this season, and both were Lynx victories by double digits.
Naturally one of the best story-lines has been the play of local star, Hutchinson native Lindsay Whalen, who is enjoying arguably her best overall season in the WNBA. Her ability to put Minnesota Gopher women's basketball on the map with an NCAA Final Four appearance will forever make her a legendary figure in the Twin Cities.
Unlike other pro sports, there is not a financial windfall for winning the WNBA title. It prompted us to ask Whalen, "What does this all mean to you?"
"The chance to be a champion and the chance to win it all," Whalen said. "If you win, you get to always say that forever. I think that, and just playing for each other. We've been through a lot this year, we have a great group of people and great fans. We've enjoyed working every day together and all those things are huge motivations for us."
After Lynx practice on Thursday, former Viking great running back Chuck Foreman, a huge fan of the team, met up with Lynx Head Coach Cheryl Reeve, who grew up as a big Chuck Foreman fan. Reeve asked Foreman to address the team at practice.
Reeve even demonstrated Foreman's patented, spin move. Look for more of that meeting Sunday night on WCCO-TV's Rosen's Sports Sunday, and we're also going to be joined by Lynx player Candice Wiggins after Game 1 of the WNBA Finals.
Lynx officials announced earlier this week the entire lower bowl at the Target Center has been sold out. The upper bowl will be open for sales for fans that are still looking for seats. The Lynx will also host a pregame block party outside the Target Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday before the game.
