Local Officers Participate In Active Shooter Training
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It seems like there has been a string of shooting rampages all across the country over the last year, and now officers here in Minnesota are taking action to be ready in the event of a mass shooting.
Officers at the local level are trying new training techniques to help prevent shootings like the ones in Newtown last year, or even Santa Monica College earlier this month.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is providing training sessions of how to deal with a situation where an active shooter is involved.
There will be between 350 and 400 participants in the training, including officers representing 60 different agencies around the Twin Cities as well as local city and school board officials.
"This training session is unique because you have the two police chiefs from two communities in the U.S. which had tragic mass casualty shootings during 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary and the Sikh temple in Wisconsin," said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek.
Stanek said that the participation of those officers will provide perspective for those participating in the training, and help people process what they now know in the wake of those mass shooting events.
The training will take place at the Marriott Hotel in Brooklyn Park beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
