Local Music Tap: Minn. Vivaldi Festival

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- As many of us know, Scandinavian culture is engrained in Minnesota culture. Soon, you can hear the sounds of Scandinavia's Vivaldi and other performances – without having to travel outside the country or state.

On Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m., LUTEFISK: Music of the Northern Lands will play at the Chapel at Plymouth Congregation Church in Minneapolis. It's part of the Minnesota Vivaldi Festival, which is dedicated to performing music from baroque Scandinavia.

The trio includes Minnesota-based musicians Maria Jette, a soprano, and Henry Lebedinsky on Harpsichord, as well as San Fransico's David Wilson on baroque violin.

Lebedinsky, the director of the festival, says that LUTEFISK is the only chamber group in the USA devoted to baroque music from Scandinavia and the northern lands.

"The Minnesota Vivaldi Festival (was) launched last fall with the intent to light a fire under the local chamber music scene," Lebedinsky said. "Our debut concert last September brought Washington, DC's premiere period-performance group The Vivaldi Project to Minnesota for the first time, performing music of Vivaldi, Händel, and more with soprano Maria Jette."

According to the festival's website, LUTEFISK aims to "illuminate the connections between Scandinavian composers and their Italian influences." Expect to hear arias and cantatas by Johan Helmich Roman and Hinrich Philip Johnsen along with virtuosic violin sonatas by Vivaldi, Agrell and Freithoff.

Tickets are $15 at the door.
