Local Air Force Veteran Logs One More Mission On 'Dream Flight'
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Memorial Day reached new heights for a special group of Veterans when they relived their favorite past-time.
The Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation honors U.S. military veterans by offering them what's called "dream flights." On Monday morning, the nonprofit celebrated its 1,000th flight.
There's not a final destination in sight -- the flight is to simply thank veterans for their service, like Bob Campbell, a modest 95-year-old World War II veteran.
"I don't if I'd pick me, necessarily," he said.
The Apple Valley native flew 49 missions over Germany, France and Norway, making way for him to mark the 1,000th flight for the AADF.
"They've already paid the price," said AADF Founder Darryl Fisher. "They've earned it."
The aircraft is the same model used to train military pilots in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
Campbell was reminded of his days in the cockpit. He says this flight is dedicated to his brother-in-law, who was also in the Air Force.
"He was a very good friend," Campbell said. "He passed away a few years ago, and I want to honor him."
The flight only lasted for a few minutes, but the look on Campbell's face says it was an experience he'll never forget.
"It's validation that they're worth something," Fisher said. "It's validation they have something to offer. It's a magical experience."
After landing, Campbell added the flight to his old log, and had a quick drink to celebrate. He received several awards during his time in the military, including the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Twelve other local World War II and Korean War veterans were also chosen for Monday's flight.
