Lino Lakes Boy To Be Honored For Saving Brother, 3, From Bee Attack
LINO LAKES, Minn. (WCCO) -- An 11-year-old Lino Lakes boy heroically saved his 3-year-old brother from a bee attack in late August. Now, he's being honored by the City of Lino Lakes and the Lino Lakes Police Department.
Michael Wheeler and his brother, Thomas, were playing in the woods of Behm's Park on Aug. 27 when Thomas lifted up a plastic snow sled on a log pile. Underneath the sled was a large nest of bees that quickly swarmed Thomas and began to sting him.
Michael then quickly ran to his brother's aid, removed bees with his bare hands and pulled Thomas out of the area. In the process, Michael received multiple stings on his hands, arms, legs and back.
The boys began running home, located about one and a half blocks away, with the bees still stinging them. Due to the pain in his legs, however, Thomas could not run any longer. At that point, Michael picked up Thomas and carried him the rest of the way home, where he called for help.
"Michael's actions demonstrate his willingness to act regardless of the danger to himself to ensure the safety of others," said Lino Lakes chief of police John Swenson.
Lino Lakes police say Michael will be honored with a Citizen Award at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
