Kylie's Kids: Meet Andre
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Any athlete will tell you being sick can wait until the off season. This week's Kylie's Kids didn't plan it that way. But he discovered he had cancer and beat it all between baseball seasons.
Kylie Bearse introduces us to Andre, the baseball player who refused to give up.
Andre, 12, looks like a pro on the baseball field.
"Baseball I like because it takes time and patience and lots of practice," Andre said.
But two years ago, just a month after the season wrapped up, Andre found out he had cancer.
"He woke up one Thursday morning and said, 'dad, I've got this lump in my stomach,'" his mother said.
That lump was a softball size tumor on his kidney.
"It was pretty crazy because that August he walked off the baseball field an average kid," mom said.
Like most teams going up against Andre, cancer was no match. After going to Children's Minnesota
"By the next season he looked like that normal average kid again," his mother said. "He did it all in the off season."
But Andre wasn't in the fight alone.
"I have a great family," he said.
His mother, dad and four brothers and sisters were all on his team. So, it's no surprise that when picking his Make-A-Wish. He brought the whole family along.
Andre's wish was to go on a cruise to Greece. So they sent the family of seven to Greece.
"I was interested in the Spartans and Greece and the history of Greece," Andre said.
Andre's favorite part of Greece was going to St. Marco's Plaza and eating gelato.
Andre was treated at Children's Minnesota.
