Kmart Ad Features 'Hot Cheetos & Takis' Kids
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minneapolis' most famous pint-sized rap stars are taking it to the next level.
The hip-hop group formerly known as the Y.N. RichKids but who now go by the name Da Rich Kidzz created the viral hit "Hot Cheetos and Takis" last summer. Now, they are now being featured in the back-to-school campaign for Kmart.
The 5-spot campaign features their new song "My Limo." The commercials began airing on TV this week.
Their parents have said this gig represents the group's "biggest payday," and that Kmart is paying them well.
There was some controversy after the kids never saw any of the money made from the paid downloads of the "Hot Cheetos" single, which now has over 7 million views on YouTube.
The kids are all part of the North Minneapolis YMCA's "Beats and Rhymes" afterschool program.
"Hot Cheetos & Takis" landed in spot number 18 among Spin Magazine's list of 2012's best songs. The magazine wrote: "this summer anthem induced more unjaded smiles than any other song in 2012."
And Rolling Stone gave the song four out of five stars and said it "may be the summer's final truly great jam."
