Klobuchar To Visit Mother Of Detained US Hiker
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar plans to visit the Minnesota mother of one of the two American hikers held in Iran for nearly two years.
Klobuchar travels to Pine City on Friday to visit Cindy Hickey, mother of 28-year-old Shane Bauer. Hickey and the mother of Josh Fattal, the other hiker, say they are starting a hunger strike to show solidarity for their sons.
Klobuchar says she spoke with Hickey and offered to visit her. The Minnesota Democrat says it's important for Hickey to know that people care about her son and are working to obtain his release.
Fattal, Bauer and Sarah Shourd were arrested along the Iraq-Iran border in 2009 and held on espionage charges, which they deny. Shourd was allowed to return to the U.S. last year on bail.
