Man Accused Of Attacking Ex-Girlfriend With Katana With Their Child Present
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 24-year-old Inver Grove Heights man is accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend with a katana after an argument last month, according to charges filed in Dakota County.
Tyler Daniel Erickson faces a felony charge of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and a misdemeanor charge of domestic assault in connection to the Oct. 17 incident.
According to the criminal complaint, authorities were dispatched on the day of the incident to a residence in Inver Grove Heights on the report of a domestic assault in progress. Upon arrival, an officer found Erickson standing next to the victim, who was lying on the ground bleeding profusely from her head.
Erickson allegedly told the officer that he hit her with a katana after an argument.
The victim told police they were arguing because she was not feeling well and Erickson did not want to take her to the doctor. She admitted to striking him. She said he then picked up the katana and struck her in the head. She said he tried to hit her again, but she was able to protect herself with her hand.
Their mutual child was also there during the assault, but was not directly involved.
If convicted, Erickson faces up to seven years in prison on the assault charge and up to 90 days on the domestic assault charge.
