Minn. Man Who Ran From Police In N.D. Dies After Jumping Into River
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say a Minnesota man who ran from Grand Forks police and jumped from a bridge into the Red River has died.
Police say 26-year-old Jose Ibanez, of Crookston, Minnesota, was pulled from the river early Saturday after a 25-minute search and was transported to a local hospital. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
The incident began about 2:20 a.m. when officers on bicycle patrol responded to a report of a possible assault. They tried talking to Ibanez when he took off running.
Authorities say Ibanez jumped off the Sorlie Bridge. Police and fire department personnel in boats eventually located Ibanez along the west bank of the river near the bridge.
The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting with the investigation.
