Talking Points: Kline's Advice For Republicans In Power
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – During his presidential campaign, President-elect Donald Trump clashed not only with rival Hillary Clinton but also with many members of the Republican Party.
Most prominent Minnesota Republicans, including former Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Reps. Erik Paulsen and John Kline, supported Sen. Marco Rubio for president.
Now, however, Republicans like House Speaker Paul Ryan are promising to work with Trump on a sweeping agenda that includes the repeal of Obamacare.
Kline, who is retiring after 14 years in Congress, admits he was stunned by Trump's win and warns that Republicans need to be careful about what they promise.
"If there is an expectation that Republicans are going to be able to waive a wand and get things done, that is simply not the case," Kline said on WCCO Sunday Morning.
He added that Republicans will need to work with Democrats to craft policy that effective and lasting.
Kline will be succeeded in Congress by former radio talk show host Jason Lewis.
While some Minnesota Republicans say they would love to see Kline run for governor in 2018, Kline says his only major plan is to retire.
