Trevino Trial Jury Resumes Deliberating At 9 A.M. Wednesday
ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- The jury in the Jeffery Trevino murder trial wrapped up Tuesday night without a verdict, and will continue deliberating at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The jury must now decide if Trevino killed his wife, Kira Steger, in their St. Paul home last February. Her body was found in May in the Mississippi River.
It was another emotional day in the courtroom and jurors are still deliberating. They started around 12:30 p.m.
In the closing arguments, the state focused on the timeline and motive as reason to believe Trevino killed Steger in a jealous rage. The defense said there simply wasn't enough physical evidence to prove it.
Steger was last seen on Feb. 21, 2013. She was on a date at the Mall of America with Trevino. What happened later that night after they went home is what jurors have to decide.
Text messages show Steger was texting her boyfriend, with whom she was an affair, throughout the night until 11:44 p.m. -- the last time anyone heard from her.
Later, gas station surveillance video shows Trevino filling up Steger's White Chevy Cobalt with gas. The car then turns left towards the freeway. Prosecutors argued he was dumping Steger's body in the river.
Later that morning, surveillance video shows Steger's car arriving at the Mall of America parking lot. Prosecutors argued it was Trevino seen walking from the parking lot to an airport taxi.
Soon after, a neighbor's camera shows an airport taxi pulling up to Trevino's street, and a man seen walking to the home. Prosecutors believe Trevino took the cab home after he murdered Steger and dropped her car off at the mall.
Then there's the blood that was found in the couple's home. The defense argued it was less than a half teaspoon, which wasn't enough to prove she was murdered there.
Days after Steger's disappearance, a bloody pillow, Steger's sports bra and sweatshirt were found in a bag near Keller Lake. Her body was found on May 8 in the Missippi River.
Autopsy reports showed she was likely smothered.
Trevino reported Steger missing on Feb. 24, which was three days after she went missing.
Prosecutors are saying Trevino had motive to kill Steger -- she was having an affair. Trevino had told friends they were trying to save their marriage.
The defense is saying there isn't enough evidence that says Trevino killed Steger in their bedroom and therefore he isn't a murderer.
