Jared Allen Breaks Vikings Sack Record
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jared Allen needed 4½ sacks Sunday against the Bears to break Michael Strahan's single-season NFL record. He came up just one short.
The Minnesota Vikings defensive end had 3½ sacks of Josh McCown in the first 40 minutes of game time, but couldn't get the final one in a 17-13 loss to Chicago.
Allen finished the season with 22 sacks, tying Jets defensive end Mark Gastineau for the second-highest single-season total in NFL history. Strahan had 22½ sacks for the Giants in 2001.
He'll have to settle for the Vikings franchise record. Chris Doleman previously held the Vikings record with 21 in 1989.
Allen says "It's like being runner-up at the prom. The crown just doesn't weigh as much, I guess."
