Jablonski Family Launches New Foundation
ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (WCCO) – Sunday marks one year since the Benilde-St. Margaret's hockey player suffered an injury on the ice that left him paralyzed.
His family said the outpouring of support Jack has received over the last year has helped him heal.
And now they intend to pay it forward.
The Saturday night match up at St. Louis Park Arena is the same as it was one year ago Sunday: Benilde-St. Margaret's versus Wayzata. One year has passed, but both teams are forever changed.
"I think everything happens for a reason, and unfortunately this has happened," Jack said.
A year ago, a check from behind left Jack Jablonski motionless on the ice. Jack's mother, Leslie, says the prognosis was grim.
"Spinal cord injuries and potential for spinal cord recovery are things we knew very little about," Leslie said.
The hockey community rallied hard around Jack. Fundraiser after fundraiser raised money to assist in the mounting medical bills. Jack got stronger and shocked doctors.
"I've come a long ways since then and what I was expected to be able to get back," Jack said.
Inspired by thousands of friends, teammates and strangers who rallied for Jabs, his family wants his story to help others.
They created the Jack Jablonski Believe in Miracles Foundation.
"It's only natural we can make that possible for other people in this situation," Leslie said. "It means a lot to our family to give back to what's been done for us."
Whether it's support from the stands or off the ice, Jack is proving his passion is inspiring.
"The support's been amazing," he said. "I just hope to keep the awareness out there with this fund," Jack saiod.
Over the last year, fundraising has amassed $50,000 in scholarships for the ABLE Program at the Courage Center. ABLE helped with Jack's recovery this past year.
