'Island Living' The New Normal In Oslo

By Adam Carter, NewsRadio 830 WCCO

OSLO, Minn. (WCCO) -- It's tough to sell cars when prospective buyers can't drive them home.

"It's about impossible," said David Dahlstrom of Dahlstrom Motors in Oslo, Minn. For the third consecutive spring, floodwaters have cutoff Oslo from the rest of the world.

The Red River has swamped the only two roads leading in and out of town.

"Nobody's been able to drive in and out of town, except by boat, for about a week now," Dahlstrom said.

Officials have told him they hope the water recedes by midweek so they can reopen the highways.

Dahlstrom says they're using the downtime to catch up on building maintenance. But fewer than half of his 35 employees are able to make it to work.

"It's a pretty good hit for a lot of them who have to burn up their vacation time, or just not get paid for a few days" Dahlstrom said. "It's a hardship on everyone."
