Inver Grove Heights Veteran, 88, Awarded Overdue Medals
ST. PAUL (WCCO) -- An Inver Grove Heights veteran finally got the recognition he deserves for his years in the service late Monday afternoon.
Jerry Grove, 88, served in France and Germany during World War II and in Korea during the Korean War.
Many of his records were destroyed in a fire back in the 1970s and it wasn't until Monday that he was awarded the medals he earned.
Sen. Al Franken also surprised Grove with an honor that left him speechless. He gave him a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in his honor.
"I'd like you to have it from the people of Minnesota and the people of the United States for your service," said Franken.
"Thank you," Grove responded.
Franken awarded Grove with 10 medals, including the World War II victory medal and the Korea Service Medal with two bronze service stars.
