Hiawatha LRT Service Resumes After Morning Ice
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) -- This fresh dose of winter caused Metro Transit's light rail line to halt Thursday morning, as ice on the power lines forced them to shut down the entire line from Mall of America to Target Field for much of the morning commute.
The wet spring snowstorm caused ice to accumulate on the overhead power lines faster than it could be scraped off, causing several trains to stall.
Buses were brought in to replace the light-rail service along the Hiawatha line. Route 55 buses provided the replacement service between Mall of America and Target Field stations.
As of 10 a.m., light rail service had resumed along the entire Hiawatha Line from downtown Minneapolis to Bloomington as the spring storm started to ease in the Twin Cities.
Systemwide, Metro Transit says, about 60 percent of its buses were running on time at 10 a.m. The average delay is under 10 minutes.
The Twin Cities metro area is expected to get 3 to 6 inches of snow. Parts of the west metro may see more, up to 10 inches by the end of the day.
Also, over 100 flights have been cancelled in an out of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
