HS Freshman Ally Rogers Sharpens Golf Skills By Outplaying Dad
SPRING LAKE PARK, Minn. (WCCO) - Ally Rogers says she got serious about golf at the age of 10, but it took a while to catch on.
"When I was younger I just remember complaining a lot on the course with my dad," Rogers said. "I thought it was too cold, and I would always be hungry or something. Just a big complainer."
That actually wasn't all that long ago. Ally is a 15-year-old freshman at Spring Lake Park. But she recently won her sectional title, and this week she'll play in her first state tournament.
"I just have to tell myself that I can do it. I have to believe in myself," she said.
A lot of Ally's success is due to the fact that she's not just comparing herself to high school competition. For the last year she's been playing every Thursday against the women at TPC in Blaine. Most of them are in their 40s.
"There's a couple good players out here that challenge me to stretch my abilities out and just make myself better," she said,
She's the only teenager afforded this privilege.
"I feel like I'm a little follower out there sometimes, but some of the people just bring me in and make me feel welcome," she said,
And Ally's skills have grown enough where now she even brings the pain to her own father.
"We shoot about the same. Sometimes I beat him. He doesn't like that very much," she said.
