Nearing Holidays Bring Early Gift: Employment
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The holiday season will do more than bring presents to good boys and girls this year.
It'll also bring jobs.
Last month, 2,000 jobs were lost in Minnesota. But as the holidays approach, the big retailers are planning on employing thousands across the nation. They hope to help decrease high unemployment levels, especially here in Minnesota.
Target plans to hire between 80,000 and 90,000 people nationwide. Last year, 30 percent of the people Target hired for the holidays, stayed with the company for year-round positions.
The Minneapolis-based retailer is not alone.
Wal-Mart plans to hire 50,000 employees across the country for the holiday rush.
Kohl's plans to increase its seasonal hiring by more than 10 percent, adding 53,000 people to supports its online business and work in stores.
Here at home, it's Domino's Pizza, which has around 50 stores around the metro, looking to hire for the season.
"We'll take a driver two nights a week, driver one night a week, full-time driver, or, if you're looking for a career...with Domino's, we certainly are hiring managers," said Jesse Pfliger, of Domino's.
Pfliger says the holiday season is big business for the pizza company. When it gets colder out, like to stay in and have the pizzas come to them. That means Domino's and other pizza delivery shops need drivers and other workers.
"We need a lot more help," he said. "We're talking about [about hiring] 200 to 250 people easily over the next month," Pfliger said.
The big box stores will begin hiring in October. Domino's is hiring right now. (If interested, just walk in and ask for application.)
WCCO-TV asked Best Buy what its hiring situation was. Best Buy said it's still figuring out how many positions it'll hire for the season.
