Police Chase Involving Stolen Car Ends In Flames On Highway 100 In Golden Valley
GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (WCCO) – A police chase involving a stolen vehicle ended in flames and backed up the morning commute on Highway 100 in Golden Valley Thursday morning.
According to the Brooklyn Park Police Department, the incident began with a shots fired call on the 1500 block of 89th Avenue just before 6 a.m.
Callers reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a speeding vehicle flee the scene.
Around the same time, officers learned of a suspicious vehicle nearby, matching the description of the suspect vehicle from the first call.
When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver – later identified as a 19-year-old man – fled. The chase made its way onto Highway 100, where police eventually managed to stop the vehicle near Duluth Street. Police said the vehicle caught fire after it was stopped.
A Minnesota Department of Transportation camera showed the driver exit the smoking vehicle with his hands in the air before being detained. It also showed an officer unsuccessfully try to douse the vehicle with a fire extinguisher. The car eventually became fully engulfed.
Law enforcement were on both sides of the highway, and traffic was significantly delayed for some time.
Police said they found a gun in the vehicle, and learned the car was stolen from Brooklyn Park.
The 19-year-old man is being held on multiple felony offenses, police said. No injuries were reported in either the shots fired incident or the chase.
