High-Risk Sex Offender To Move From Golden Valley To Mpls.
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A level 3 sex offender will relocate from Golden Valley to Minneapolis, according to Minneapolis Police.
Sixty-four-year-old Clarence Opheim committed more than 100 sex acts with kids in the 1970s and 80s. After serving his time, he was civilly committed to the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter.
Back in March, Opheim became the first person in the state to be released from the hospital's sex offender program.
Opheim moved into Damascus Way in Golden Valley, near Highway 100 and Olson Memorial Highway, in March.
The Golden Valley Police Department held a community meeting one week before Opheim moved into his apartment, discussing his sex offender status and his recent release from MSH.
According to Golden Valley mayor Shep Harris, several factors where in play to make Opheim's residency a success.
"I credit the efforts of social workers, the Golden Valley police, and other law enforcement authorities involved in the process," Harris said. "There was much concern when Mr. Opheim first moved to Golden Valley. But the system worked. Ongoing monitoring and social services have succeeded and now Mr. Opheim will move on to the next stage of his rehabilitation."
Police say they had no contact with Opheim, nor did they receive phone calls about him.
