Hiawatha Ave. Closing Overnight This Week
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) --The span of Hiawatha Avenue underneath the Martin Olav Sabo Pedestrian Bridge will be closing overnight this week.
According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the bridge will be closed while crews work to adjust the cable stays on the bridge.
A couple of the cables snapped on the bridge in February, temporarily closing a stretch of the highway underneath and sidelining light rail service in the area for days.
In February, the Department of Public Works said a failed diaphram plate from the bridge was found on the ground with the cables still connected to it.
After the incident, the bridge was closed to pedestrian traffic.
From Wednesday at 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next morning, Highway 55 will be closed between East 26th Street and East 28th Street as crews adjust the tension on the bridge's cable stays.
