'Hamilton' Heading To Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- After three years on Broadway, the musical Hamilton will soon be on stage here in Minneapolis.

And on Monday, your chances of getting tickets at more affordable prices got better.

Single tickets go on sale next Thursday, but beginning Monday, Ticketmaster is offering what's called "verified fan registration." It allows you sign up to buy tickets online at regular prices, without competing with scalpers and bots.

But there are limitations. WCCO's Angela Davis shows us how it works.

"It is exciting to have a show that big come to Minneapolis," Dale Stark with Hennepin Theatre Trust said.

Hamilton is expected to sell out every night during its six-week run at the Orpheum in downtown Minneapolis. Dale Stark is with Hennepin Theatre Trust.

"It's one of the most requested shows we've had in years," Stark said.

Season ticket-holders are all set to see Hamilton. Everyone else can buy tickets beginning Thursday, June 21.

But this is what you can do right now: Go to the Ticketmaster Verified Fan registration site for Hamilton, and enter your contact information.

On June 20, you'll be notified by email if you've been selected to buy up to four tickets. And then Thursday, June 21, you'll get a text message with an access code and a link to make your purchase.

"This helps get rid of the scalpers and the automated buy-up ticket purchasers so that real people can go and buy tickets," Stark said. "So that the second the show goes on sale, the tickets don't disappear. They'll be sold to people and not third-party systems that then try to sell them way above the price."

Harvey Rupert, a Hamilton fan, says he got an email about it Monday morning.

"Within 10 seconds I was on the website, because my wife would be completely ecstatic," Rupert said. "Until I saw that email I didn't think I was going to get a chance to see it in the next 10 years, until the prices came down."

To be clear, registering on the Ticketmaster verified fan site doesn't guarantee you'll be able to buy Hamilton tickets. They're randomly selecting people. The deadline to do it is this Friday night, just before midnight.

A very limited number of tickets will available at the box office next Thursday, when they go on sale at 10 a.m., but they will go very quickly.

Tickets range in price from $79 to $199, and there will also be a limited number of premium seats on sale for $479 a ticket. "Hamilton" took Broadway by storm in 2015, breaking box office and Tony Award records along the way.

Hamilton is still on Broadway, and will likely play there forever. It is also still playing in Chicago, where it's expected to continue for years. The touring company that's coming to Minneapolis started in San Francisco, then went to Los Angeles and is now making its way across the nation.
