Guthrie Theater Celebrates 50 Years
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Guthrie Theatre is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend in Minneapolis.
Spokeswoman Trish Santini says it all began in the early 1960s when founder Tyrone Guthrie was looking for a home for what he envisioned to be a world-class, regional theater.
Guthrie Turns 50
Guthrie wanted a space with all of the top-notch talent of Broadway, minus the hustle and bustle of big city New York. Santini says a few local visionaries from the day convinced Guthrie to set up shop in Minneapolis.
Santini added that the Guthrie's new home on the Mississippi River has only served to strengthen the organization's relationship with the community, offering far more to the city and its people than in the past.
This weekend's plans include an evening of fundraising parties and performances, and a free community celebration on Sunday.
