Groundbreaking For U's Athletes Village Set For Oct. 30
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The University of Minnesota announced Wednesday it will hold a ground breaking ceremony for its new, state-of-the-art Athletes Village at the end of the month.
The $166 million project was approved by the U's Board of Regents earlier this month. Officials will put shovels in the ground to kick off the project on Oct. 30. The event will be held at the Bierman Complex at 11 a.m. and will include several school leaders and project supporters.
The plans include three new structures on the athletic department's existing footprint in the area of 15th Avenue SE and 5th Street SE. The project is headlined by the Land O'Lakes Center for Academic Excellence, a facility for all 720 student-athletes with an expanded academic center, leadership center, training table and dining areas.
Plans include new practice facilities for the football program as well as the men's and women's basketball teams. There will also be a new track facility built in the East Bank campus.
The groundbreaking event is open and the general public is welcome. If donations continue to come in, the new facility should be completed by January 2018.
