GOP's Pawlenty Sending First 2012 Mailer In Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty is introducing himself to Iowans by mail this week, sending his first mailing advertisement of the 2012 caucus campaign.

The mailer features pictures of Pawlenty and his wife, Mary. It's expected to land into the mailboxes of thousands of likely Iowa caucusgoers by Thursday.

Iowa's caucuses begin the nominating season next year.

The former Minnesota governor plans to compete aggressively in the Iowa Republican Party's straw poll. It's scheduled for Ames in mid-August. Aides say Pawlenty plans to spend roughly 15 days in Iowa next month.

He also is announcing state campaign co-chairmen Christian Fong and Roger Underwood, and is returning to the state this weekend. Fong briefly sought the 2010 Republican gubernatorial nomination, and Underwood is an adviser to Gov. Terry Branstad.
