Gophers Could Be Without Cobb Against Wisconsin
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The University of Minnesota football team may be without one of its best players in Saturday's showdown at Wisconsin.
Running back David Cobb leads the Gophers with 1,430 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, but his status is uncertain after suffering a hamstring injury in the win at Nebraska. Appearing on WCCO Radio's Sports Huddle with Sid and Dave, Gopher coach Jerry Kill says they'll have to be patient with Cobb's injury.
"It's a big question mark," said Kill, who's led the Gophers to eight wins in each of the past two seasons. "With a hamstring you just don't know. It's just going to be a deal where we're not going to know for a while."
If Cobb can't play, Kill will rotate senior Donnell Kirkwood and junior Roderick Williams in the backfield. Redshirt freshman running back Berkeley Edwards is also iffy after suffering a concussion in the Nebraska game.
"If (Cobb) doesn't go, they'll have to step it up," Kill told Sid and Dave. "I know the other two young men will give us everything they've got, and that's all you can ask."
Cobb, who's a senior, is just 35 yards away from Laurence Maroney's 2005 school record for rushing yards in a season.
The winner of Saturday's game in Madison not only takes home Paul Bunyan's Axe, but also qualifies for the Big Ten championship game.
