Gopher Volleyball Starts New Season With New Coach Out East
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- In eight days, the University of Minnesota volleyball team travels to Pennsylvania to open up its season.
The Gophers, ranked No. 12 in the country in a preseason poll, play USC and Oregon in the AVCA Showcase at State College in Pennsylvania.
These matches against two strong programs will pose quite a challenge for the Gophers. It's a transition year for Minnesota as legendary coach Mike Hebert retired after last season and Laura Bush has taken over as the interim head coach.
Bush played for Hebert and has tremendous respect for what he did for the Gophers. Bush's goal is to keep things going in the right direction.
"My job is to carry through the good parts and a lot of really good parts that Mike brought to the program," Bush said. "But then also add the transition piece of getting this team ready for this season and then getting them ready for when Hugh gets here in another year."
"We've really worked well with the new coaching staff. We've had a lot of meetings to get to know the coaches and they get to know us," said Gophers senior Jessica Granquist. "We just got at it more cohesively. They have something, they try it out on us and we give them feedback on if it works or doesn't work."
