Gopher Basketball Retiring Randy Breuer's Jersey Saturday
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The University of Minnesota men's basketball program will honor one of its great players Saturday with a jersey retirement during the Gophers' game against Illinois at Williams Arena.
Gophers great Randy Breuer, a Lake City, Minn., native, will have his No. 45 jersey retired during a halftime ceremony Saturday. The game is scheduled to start at 1:15 p.m.
The 7 foot, 3 inch Breuer played for Minnesota from 1979-83 and helped lead the Gophers to a Big Ten championship in 1982. He was named the team's MVP in 1983 after leading Minnesota in scoring, rebounds and blocked shots for the third straight year.
Breuer is third all-time in scoring for the Gophers with 1,777 career points and second in blocks with 229. He's one of only five Gophers players ever to record more than 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 150 blocks.
He also played 11 seasons in the NBA, three with the Timberwolves.
