Good Question: Who Are Minnesota's Billionaires?
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Forbes released its newest billionaires list on Tuesday. Topping the list for the third year in a row was Bill Gates, whose net worth is valued at $75 billion. There were 1,810 billionaires on the 2016 list, down from 1,826 last year.
Three current Minnesotans made the list and two dropped off from 2015. So, who are Minnesota's billionaires? Good Question.
"People debate it all the time. We try to be conservative in our numbers. We try to factor in as much debt as possible," Luisa Kroll, Forbes assistant managing editor of wealth, told CBS This Morning.
Whitney MacMillan comes in at #308 with a net worth of $4.8 billion. The former Cargill CEO now owns an estimated 10 percent stake in the company his great-grandfather founded in 1865. In total, there are 14 members of the Cargill family on the Forbes billionaires list. Only MacMillan lives in Minnesota.
At #854, Stanley Hubbard is worth $2.1 billion. The media mogul owns 14 TV stations, 46 radio stations and a cable network.
Glen Taylor comes in at #1,011 with a net worth of $1.8 billion. The Timberwolves and Lynx owner stepped down as CEO of his printing company last summer. He also bought the Star Tribune in 2014 and, in a 2014 interview with WCCO's Mike Max, Taylor said of that purchase, "Part of it in is my heart, so it's all not all business."
Marilyn Carlson Nelson and Barbara Carlson Gage, who share ownership of Carlson, Inc., a large travel and hospitality company, are no longer on the billionaire list. They were each worth $1.1 billion each last year.
Best Buy founder Richard Schulze, a Minnesotan who now lives in Florida, is worth $2.4 billion.
