Golfers, Gardeners Aching For Spring's Arrival
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The calendar says the first day of spring is Wednesday.
But at Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn Park, Minn., spring is nowhere in sight.
It's a complete 180 degrees from last year.
"We opened on (March) 17th last year and we did probably 150 players every day through the rest of March," said head golf professional Don Berry. "It was just great business."
In 2012, it was 79 degrees. Tuesday's high was 23 -- that's a 56-degree swing.
Edinburgh isn't the only business anxious for warm weather. Last year, Lynde's Greenhouse and Nursery in Maple Grove was already doing landscaping work weeks ahead of schedule.
Now, they are at the mercy of Mother Nature.
"On a day like today when the sun is shining, you get to smell the soil, you get to smell the plants, things are starting to bloom and we can feel it," co-owner, Derek Lynde said. "And we are as excited as anyone else for the season to start."
Lynde said pansies are the first flowers to be planted since they can handle below-freezing overnight temperatures.
With several inches of snow on the ground, Lynde thinks it could be weeks before even the pansies start to sell.
