Girl, 10, Starts Lemonade Stand To Help Kids With Cancer
SHAKOPEE, Minn. (WCCO) -- A young girl in Shakopee is trying to accomplish a goal: to help kids with cancer.
Mollie Ferrel set up a lemonade stand at the corner of Brittany Drive and 17th Avenue. She stands with her sign, waiting for her next customer. She wants to sell as much lemonade as she can.
"I'm doing the lemonade stand for kids with cancer," Mollie said.
The 10-year-old sells to friends, strangers and neighbors. She's made $65 to $70 a day so far. Every bit of change counts, but she's looking for more customers to reach her goal of $2,500.
"So far I've raised $1,600," Mollie said.
The money will help two girls.
"Alannah, who has neuroblastoma, and I'm raising money for Destiny Love. Destiny is really, really kind, and she needs a lot of help," Mollie said.
She's raising money through the Miracles of Mitch Foundation. The nonprofit supports families whose kids are battling cancer through financial assistance and quality of life support.
"To pay their mortgage and other bills, like medical bills," Mollie said.
To say her mom is proud is an understatement.
"My heart was wondering will she do it, will she follow through? But every day, on the clock, she's out here," Kim Ferrel said.
The 10-year-old knows it might look like a lemonade stand, but to her, it's about so much more.
"It's just a good lesson to learn also to help other kids in need," she said.
Mollie will be at the stand at Brittany Drive and 17th Avenue in Shakopee Thursday from 2:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. She'll be back for a final day on Friday.
The fundraising culminates on Saturday when she will participate in a Miracle Kids triathlon to race for kids who can't.
