Get Ready To Celebrate 'National Record Store Day'

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Saturday will be a special day -- a day to appreciate something old that is new once again.

It's National Record Store Day across the country.

"As a long-term record buyer, I can tell you it's the funnest day of the year because all the neat, cool stuff comes out," Mill City Sound owner Rob Sheeley said. "All the limited-edition pressings, alternate outtakes of certain albums that came out before, they're now putting special things into them, colored vinyl, shaped vinyl!"

Sheeley, whose record store is in Hopkins, says a lot of the special releases are only limited to 3,000 copies.

He expects lines of people waiting before dawn to get into his store come Saturday. He also plans to have live music throughout the day.

Vinyl records are more popular now then they have been in the last three decades. According to Digital Music News and the Wall Street Journal, more vinyl records were sold last year than any other year since they started tracking sales in 1992. And the biggest buyers of vinyl are millennials.

"They didn't grow up with a record player," Sheeley said. "They didn't grow up with physical content at all, as matter of fact they didn't grow up with CDs."

Sheeley says they don't only buy classic rock albums like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones, but current artists like Beck as well.

"There's a whole romance with vinyl because of the jacket, the art, the cover and the warm sound," he said.

National Record Store Day has been celebrated since 2008.

WCCO music blogger Cole Premo recently talked with several record stores to see what their most-anticipated releases are on National Record Store Day.
