Get Movin' Monday: Memorial Day Weekend
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Memorial Day is next Monday and this week in Get Movin' Monday, WCCO's Kim Johnson and local blogger Melissa Oprish shared some fun activities to celebrate the holiday with the family.
A lot of people will be lighting up barbecue grills, go boating, play yard games, and so on. That's all fine but it's important to not lose sight of the real meaning of Memorial Day.
Oprish, from the Twin Cities Moms Blog and Nourished Peach, shared some ideas you can do with the whole family. Enjoy a patriotic fruit salad, or a red, white and blue dessert! You can see her tips for food in the video above.
Another festive activity that works for Memorial Day is to play family games or use eco-friendly, made-in-the-U.S. toys. Oprish suggested creative construction kits from YOXO.
Another very special way to mark the day is to send letters and cards to soldiers. The letters mean a lot to those defending the nation, and serve as a great opportunity to teach kids about the true meaning of Memorial Day.
Several nonprofits such as A Million Thanks can find soldiers and send your letters to them for you if you do not know one personally.
